THE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION TOWARD THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY FACILITIES IN SUPPORTING LANGUAGE LEARNING
Abstract
The aim of the study was to explore students’ perception on university library facilities in supporting language learning. The research was conducted at the English Language program at a Private University in Yogyakarta involving three students of batch 2014. The participants were three students who were the most frequent visitor, infrequent visitor and student who never visit library based on the data of frequency library visitors. The research employed a descriptive qualitative research design and used descriptive qualitative. In collecting the data, the researcher interviewed participants in October 2017. This study had two findings, the first finding showed the aspects need to be improved from the university library were the number of newest book collections, the number of English books, book arrangements, and library media, books limitation in circulation service and library service hours. The second finding showed the benefits of library facilities in language learning. The key aspects were easy to search online materials, helping to find learning materials, an alternative place to study. Moreover, this research had additional finding. The participants mentioned the benefits of American Corner as one of the university library divison. However, this study focus on perception about the university library, the additional finding was showed to gave more information for readears about the benefit of the facilities for language learning. The benefits of American Corner were benefits of books, vocabulary mastering, improving students’ pronunciation, improving speaking skills, improving listening skills, improving students’ motivation.
