THE PRACTICE OF AUTONOMOUS LEARNING METHOT AT EED UMY
Abstract
This research explained about the practice of autonomous learning method at EED UMY. This was deliberately done to improve the quality of students’ learning because the autonomous learning method has become a trend in education. The autonomous learning at EED UMY has been applied since 2010. This research aimed to identify whether practice of autonomous learning method and to reveal the parts of autonomous learning are. The research investigated whether the application of autonomous learning method was applied effectively or not.
This research used a quantitative research with respondents from all students in academic year 2012 at EED UMY as many as 90 students. The data analysis of this research was descriptive statistic. Descriptive statistic was used to describe, to present, to further analyze and to interpret the data what the data mean. SPSS V.20 was applied to process the data.
There are three aspects of autonomous learning method namely, students, lecturers and infrastructure. The result from students’ aspect was 74.43% and the mean approximately was > 2.3 – 3.16, it means has a “high” result. The result from lecturers’ aspect was 87.2% and the mean has > 3.1. It means has a “very high” result. The result from infrastructures’ aspect was 93.3% and the mean approximately was > 3.1. It means has a “very high” result. The obstacles of the autonomous learning method are time, energy, responsibility, understanding, learning material, instruction and motivation. Students assumed that learning material become the obstacle that is important, especially textbooks. This research could be concluded that the application of autonomous learning method can be accepted in the teaching and learning process at EED UMY although, there is improvement in the infrastructure aspect. Some suggestions are conducted for the lecturers, students, EED UMY institution and further researcher.
