      Abstract
Background: Stroke is a disturbance of brain function both focally or globally that happens more than 24 hours or causes death and permanent damage caused by disruption on blood flow to the brain. Eighty percent of stroke patients suffer from ischemic stroke or infarction and the other 20% suffer from hemorraghic stroke. Abnormal lipid profile is one of the risk factors of ischemic stroke. Checking high density lipoprotein (HDL) level is expected to predict lesion characteristic that depicts the severity of stroke in facilities that lack stroke diagnostic tools such as CT scan and to prevent patients condition to worsen. This study was done to view the effect of HDL level to brain lesion characteristic in CT scan examination. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done to 52 samples of ischemic stroke patients in PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Gamping, Yogyakarta. Samples were obtained using secondary data of medical records to see the HDL levels and the CT scan examination results. Data was analyzed using Spearman test to determine the correlation between said variables. Results: This study found 22 (42.3%) patients with low HDL level and mild lesion characteristic, 2 (3.8%) patients with low HDL level and severe lesion characteristic, 24 (46.2%) patients with high HDL level with mild lesion characteristic, and 4 (7.7%) patients with high HDL level with severe lesion characteristic. Spearman test results show p=0.513. Conclusion: There are no significant correlation between HDL level and brain lesion characteristic.
