dc.description | Hearing impaired students had to learn English in order to graduate from the school. In learning English, they faced many problems which would hamper them in mastering English skills. Thus, certain aids, such as visual aids are needed to help them learn English. The purposes of this research were to investigate the reasons why the teachers use visual aids in teaching English and to examine the effects of visual aids for the students with hearing impairments in English classroom. This research was conducted at one special school in Yogyakarta in which two English teachers who had minimum five years teaching experience and used visual aids in teaching English were chosen. Moreover, descriptive qualitative research design was applied in this research, and the data were collected using individual interviews. As a result, the researcher found some findings. The first, it was related to the reasons of using visual aids in teaching English to students with hearing impairments such as a means to help the students learn, give interesting media for the students, and give affordable access for teaching. In terms of the effects of using visual aids in teaching English to students with hearing impairments, it consisted of the students’ positive feeling, the teacher’s positive feeling, the students’ understanding the materials better, the students’ ability to accomplish the task, teachers’ ability to achieve the learning goal, and the students’ longlasting memory about their study. | en_US |
