      Abstract
The rail track structure is the primary infrastructure in the railways' industry. Therefore, its security and comfort need to be maintained to reduce the risk of train accidents. Rail track structures in Indonesia are mostly using conventional rail track type, which has a short service life of ballast layer and has high maintenance costs. Based on these problems, there needs to be an effort to improve the quality of the rail track structure, so that it can optimize the service life. In this study, the scrap rubber and asphalt was used for modification of ballast layer on the rail track structure and expected to fix problems on ballast. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristic of the ballast mixture trough the value of vertical deformation, aggregate abrasion, and elastic modulus. This research used 2% bitumen and 10% scrap rubber from the total weight of the sample. The method used in this research was the compressive test with three (3) sample. The results of the study showed that the smallest vertical deformation value occurred on ballast unmodified (sample I) by 5 mm at the load of 377,48 kPa. Besides, the smallest value of abrasion occurred on ballast modified by bitumen and scrap rubber (sample III) by 16 grams (0,30%). Furthermore, the most significant elastic modulus value occurred on ballast unmodified (sample I) by 23,72 MPa.
