      Abstract
This article aims to describe the discourse on gender in Indonesia. This discourse will show the road map of Indonesian women movement to challenge the traditional gender roles and struggle for gender equality in Indonesia. The The finding show that the need for Indonesian union and political order and the influence of Javanese culture made the Indonesian women spirit for fighting against male domination less likely to be exposed. Indonesian democratization is like a backsword for women. At the one side democracy give an opportunity for woman to be more active in politics as a leader or representative, but at the other side it has allowed some Islamic fundamentalist organizations who do not agree with gender equality concept to flourish and bring out the revival of patriarchal values.
