      Abstract
Background: Hyperlipidemia is a lipid metabolism disorder characterized by increased triglycerides in blood (Velayutham et al., 2008). Uncontrolled hyperlipidemia can cause atherosclerosis, which is the underlying cause of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (Goldstein, 1973). Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is known to improve LPL enzyme activity, thus reducing triglycerides level. Methods: Experimental study using pre and post with control group design was performed on male Wistar rats which were given high fat diet in the form of quail egg yolk for 1.4 ml/200-gram body weight/day. Samples include 30 rats divided into 6 groups, i.e. negative control, positive control, standard (hyper triglyceride rats given 0.72 mg/200 mg body weight of simvastatin), and 3 treatment groups which were given Okra fruit (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) at 0.18 gram (P1), 0.36 gram (P2), and 0.72 gram (P3), immersed in 3.6 mL water. Triglycerides level was analyzed using Enzymatic Colorimetric Test (GOD PAP) method. Results: The results showed that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) of mean triglycerides level decrease in all groups. The most effective dose of Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) in decreasing triglycerides was 0.72 gram immersed in 3.6 mL water. Conclusion: Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) immersed in water can decrease triglycerides level of male Wistar rats given high fat diet.
