THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND STUDENTS F PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASSROOM
Abstract
Learning environment is the place where teaching and learning can take place in the
most effective and productive way. Meanwhile, student participation is the student’s active
involvement in learning activity. This research is conducted to analyze whether there is any
correlation between learning environment and students’ participation in the classroom at the
English Language Education Department of a private university in Yogyakarta. This used a
quantitative research method specifically a correlational design. The data for this research
was collected from 95 students of the English Language Education Department at a private
university at Yogyakarta batch 2016, using questionnaire. The result showed that the level of
the learning environment is 3.06. It means that the learning environment had a high level.
Meanwhile, the result of students’ participation is 2.24, which mean that students’
participation level is classified in the moderate category. Furthermore, the result of the
correlation between learning environment and students’ participation is 0.00. The level of the
correlation (r) of this research is 0.421. It means there is a moderate significant correlation
between learning environment and students’ participation
