PEROKOK PASIF SEBAGAI FAKTOR RISIKO SINDROM MATA KERING PADA ANAK USIA 13–19 TAHUN
Abstract
Background : The exposure of cigarette smoke from active smokers has a
negative impact for surrounding environst, including children. The mucosa in the
eye’s conjunctiva is very sensitive to a variety of irritating chemicals and gases
which contained in cigarette smoke and can cause conjunctival redness,
hyperlacrimation and dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome is a complex symptom
that occurs as a result of various diseases that are associated with reduced
volume or components of tears, excessive tear evaporation, eyelid surface
abnormalities, or epithelium.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to know the correlation between passive
smoking as a risk factor of dry eye syndrome on children 13–19 years old.
Method : This study was an observational analytic with cross-sectional design.
The sample consisted of 60 children aged 13–19 years who met the inclusion and
exclusion criteria. The research instrument used a questionnaire and OSDI
(Ocular Surface Disease Index). The data analysis used Spearman-Rank
correlation.
Results : The mean age of respondents was 15.9±0.4 years and the mean value of
OSDI score was 24.2±1.0. The bivariat analysis shows that there is a weak
correlation (r = 0.212) and not statistically significant (p = 0.105).
Conclusion : Passive smoking as a risk factor for dry eye syndrome on children
13–19 years old has a weak correlation and not statistically significant.
