THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE FREQUENCY OF READING ENGLISH SHORT STORIES AND STUDENTS’ PAST TENSE MASTERY
Abstract
Reading English short stories influences language learners to increase their
reading skill and grammar. In this study, the researcher used to read English short
stories to measure students’ ability in mastery of simple past tense. The aims of
this study are to know the frequency of reading English short stories of students,
to know the simple past tense level of students, and to investigate the correlation
between the frequency of reading English short story and students' simple past
tense mastery. This study used quantitative research method on explanatory
research design. There were 63 students at Translating class in English Language
Education Department (ELED) of a private university in Yogyakarta as
participants. The researcher distributed the questionnaire by sharing a link of
Google form through WhatsApp and line class group, and gathering the data by
asking permission to one of Translating students to join and get the access to share
the link. The results show that the frequency English short stories were in very
low category with the mean is 18.84. Meanwhile, students’ simple past tense
mastery was in good level with the mean score 81.25. The result of the correlation
between two variables showed that the pearson correlation value (r-value) on
0.087. Hence, alternative hypothesis of this study was accepted as there was a
correlation between the frequency English short stories and students’ simple past
tense mastery although the correaltion was very low.
