REPRESENTASI STEREOTYPE DAN PREJUDICE IDENTITAS PEREMPUAN DALAM FILM LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA
Abstract
Film is an effective communication medium in delivering messages to the
public, through sound and images. Film constructs a reality taken from everyday life.
Like in India, which is known for its women's issues, which later became something
interesting to be appointed as a film. One of them is the Lipstick Under My Burkha
film that represents women's identity seen from the stereotypes and prejudices that
are built especially in India. Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017) tells the story of four
women who have their own problems fighting for their identity. The strong
patriarchal culture in India, has made their struggle broken. In this study aims to
find out how stereotypes and prejudices are represented in the Lipstick Under My
Burkha film by conducting semiotic analysis through the method of Roland Barthes.
This study analyzes the meaning of denotations, connotations, and myths contained in
the film. Based on the research that has been done shows that representation of
stereotype and prejudice of women's identity are still considered as second-class
creatures. Stereotypes of women in India are considered as triggers of sexual
violence carried out by men, as objects, weak, and only as satisfying male desires.
Womens are required to always accept decisions and not be given the opportunity to
voice their wishes. From that stereotype, negative prejudices emerge. So that the
stereotype and prejudice encourage the existence of a discriminatory attitude
towards women's identity, such as being bullied, persecuted, restrained so as not to
violate the norms that have been constructed in society.
