The church traces its history from about AD 330, when Saint Fruentius was consecreted its first bishop by Saint Athanasius , patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt. After the 6th century, however , Ethiopia was practically isolated from the rest of the Christian world by the surrouncing Muslim power.
