HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARD LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 5 YOGYAKARTA
Abstract
Attitude was one of issue as a factor to influence students in learning English language. Here, students were defined as high school students who proceeded to find themselves or in puberty time. Puberty time period had many problems and affect to their attitude changes, also their learning process. This study investigated high school students’ attitudes toward learning English language at Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta Senior High School (SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta). The aim of this study was to find out positive and negative attitudes toward learning English language of students at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta. This study used quantitative descriptive study as the research method. The respondents were students at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta from grade X, XI and XII in all focused study (science and social). 246 questionnaires were distributed to students at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta and all questionnaires returned. SPSS 22 and Microsoft Excel were used to analyzed all the data. The result showed that students at SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Yogyakarta had moderately positive attitude toward learning English language. It was known by mean value of all the data which was 3.01. Also, mean value of majority questionnaires item displayed in high score were between 2.6-3.4, and those mean values were categorized as moderately positive attitude until positive attitude and only one statement that has mean value 2.3 (moderately negative attitude). Furthermore, students also had strong instrumental orientation in learning English language (learning English for career goal or other practical reason).
