THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND STUDENTS’ TOEFL-LIKE SCORE
Abstract
This research is to find out the correlation between students’ achievement and students’ TOEFL-like score at English Language Education Department of a private university in Yogyakarta. The study was designed as quantitative research with correlation design. This research population was the whole students at English Language Education Department batch 2014 and 132 students were involved as respondents. Students’ TOEFL-like score were taken from students. The score document of TOEFL-like from International Language Testing (ILT) course. TOEFL-like test is based on paper based test which measures listening skill, structure and written expression and reading comprehension. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) through SPSS program version 20.The results revealed that students’ achievement was in the moderate level (2.36 – 3.16) and students’ TOEFL score was in the fair level (444-524). The result also showed that the significance value was 0.000 < 0.05 and the correlation value (r value) was 0.438. It means that there is positive and significant correlation between students’ achievement and students’ TOEFL score at English Language Education Department of a private university in Yogyakarta batch 2014 on the moderate level. So, the hypothesis was accepted.
