PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS THE USE OF REALIA IN TEACHING VOCABULARY AT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Abstract
Vocabulary plays important role in learning foreign language. The teacher needs to implement suitable techniques and media in order to ease the students in learning vocabulary in foreign language. This research aims to explore pre-service teachers’ perception towards the use of realia in teaching vocabulary. This research intended to investigate three main objectives; classroom activities implemented by pre-service teachers in teaching vocabulary using realia, the strengths of using realia in teaching vocabulary, and the weaknesses of using realia in teaching vocabulary. This research was conducted at English Language Education Department in a Private University in Yogyakarta and involved four participants from this department. Qualitative design was used as the research method and descriptive qualitative as the research design. The data was gathered through the interview. The result showed that there are four activities implemented by pre-service teachers when teaching vocabulary at the internship program. The pre-service teachers implemented group discussion, game activity, question and answer activity, and outdoor learning activity. Regarding to the strengths on the use of realia, this research found six results. They are ease teacher to deliver the topic, enable students to be more active, attract students’ attention, help students acquire new vocabularies, build creative classroom and one effective learning media to teach vocabulary. Additionally, there are four results regarding to the weaknesses of using realia in teaching vocabulary, those are; limited size and quantity of the object, uncontrolled classroom condition, complicated preparation before teaching and extra cost to buy the object.
