Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of the relationship between social background, religious values and voluntary activities on publik service motivation in 4 countries namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The second objective of this study is to look at the effect of mediator variables, namely social demographics on social background, religious values, voluntary activities and publik service motivation. The construct of publik service motivation theory is the commitment to publik interests, interest in policymaking, compassion and self-sacrifice. By conducting a comparative study in 4 ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines), this study specifically analyzed differences in social background, religious values and voluntary activities on publik service motivation in 4 countries. This research uses mixed methods an explanatory model by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Data collection was carried out simultaneously on 750 civil servants and 35 informants in 4 countries. The findings of this study indicate that social background affects the motivation of publik services in the Philippines. The value of religiosity affects the motivation of publik services in Malaysia and the Philippines. Voluntary activities affect the motivation of publik services in Indonesia. Mediator variables (age, education level and income) significantly influence publik service motivation in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. in this study, no significant value was found in Thai data.
