ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF GADGETS AS TOOLS IN LEARNING ENGLISH
Abstract
Nowadays, students are accustomed to the development and the use of gadgets. The use of gadgets itself have both positive and negative sides for students. This study aimed to find out English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta students’ perception on the use of gadgets as tools in learning English. This study used qualitative research approach and specifically employed descriptive qualitative research. In this study, the researcher chose interview to collect the data. There were four participants who are the students’ of EED of UMY from batch 2013-2016. The first purpose of this study is to find out kinds of gadgets that was often used by EED students. This study revealed that students of EED of UMY often use mobile phones as their gadget preference. The second purpose is to find out the advantages of the use of gadgets as learning tools at EED of UMY. The findings showed that, there are several advantages of the use of gadgets as learning tools including that gadgets are more practical, make learning easier, and economical. The last purpose is to find out the disadvantages of the use of gadgets as learning tools in EED of UMY. The findings showed that, there are three disadvantages of the use of gadgets as learning tools including that gadgets affect students’ health, gadgets are source of distraction, and gadgets make it easier for students to do plagiarism activities.
