dc.description.abstractVocabulary plays an important role in language learning especially for students who learn English language. Even though it is important, there are some problems related to students’ vocabulary size. The aims of this research were to find out strategies used in learning vocabulary and to know students’ perception about the advantages of using strategies in learning vocabulary. The researcher selected four students of English Language Department at one of a private univerisities in Yogyakarta. The participants were in their sixth semester when the data were taken. The researcher collected the data using interview. The researcher used descriptive qualitative to explain the data. The first finding of this research showed that there were nine strategies that the students used to improve their vocabulary size. Those strategies were practicing the pronounciation, listening to music, making the list of vocabulary, reading text extensively, using dictionary, memorizing the spelling and pronounciation, asking the expert, guessing the meaning of the context, and watching movie. Besides, there were four findings for the second research question which was about ELED students’ perception about the advantages of using strategies in learning vocabulary. The advantages were that the strategies were easy to do, helpful for the students, helpful in improving vocabulary, and helpful in knowing the spelling.en_US
