STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN GROUP DISCUSSIONS AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA
Abstract
The aims of this study were to know (1) students’ participation level in group discussions at ELED of UMY, (2) factors that influence students’ participation in group discussions at ELED of UMY, and (3) factors that influence students’ nonparticipation in group discussions at ELED of UMY. This study used quantitative research design and descriptive research method. The data were collected from 122 students of ELED of UMY batch 2014. This study used and adapted the questionnaire from Atwood’s (2004) study. The result of this study showed that the students’ participation level in group discussions at ELED of UMY is in moderate category as it was shown by the mean 2.75. Then, the result showed that the most influencing factor of students’ participation in group discussions is that participation in group discussion increases the use of English as the foreign language as it was shown by the frequency of 85.2% or 104 students. Last, the result showed that the most influencing factor of students’ nonparticipation is that students have lack of preparation before discussions as it was shown by the frequency of 50.8% or 62 students.
